Description : The rotary dryer consists of feeding unit, which is driven by ? hp motor, gearbox, 0.4-m-diameter and 1.8-m-long rotating tank, which is driven by 1 hp motor, a bower and a heater. Fresh chili with the initial moisture content of 78-84% wb were fed into the cylinder, while hot air was blew through the heater by the blower to decrease the moisture content of the chili. The chilies were fed into the cylinder until the moisture content decreased to 15% wb.

Utilization : A conventional method to dry chilies is solar drying, which is used throughout the country particularly the areas in Nakornrachasima province. Farmers have to build a drying house from bamboo sticks and plastic covered. The harvested chilies are then laid on a husk layer with the thickness of 5 inches. By using this method, chilies will be dry witฟhin 6-7 days. However, the method has many disadvantages such as the chilli drying can not be done in a raining season or a cloudy day. There are a lot of chilies during harvesting period, which can not be dried in time and damaged by bacteria or fungi. To dry chilies in a drying house, farmers need to turn chilies up side down in order to dry them thoroughly. Doing this is a time-consuming process and can be affected respiratory system of the farmers. Furthermore, the process is difficult for hygienic control and chilies are easily to be damaged by insects, birds or rodents. Finally, the life-time of a drying house is short thus farmers have to rebuild it many times. To overcome these problems, an electrical heated rotary dryer was introduced. Such dryer has small size, as a result small area is required and drying can be done in any climate conditions. Moreover, the drying temperature can be controlled, the chilies therefore can be dry thoroughly. Besides this, hygiene of the product can be controlled and the control of the dryer is manipulated. This dryer also can be used to decrease the moisture in other products such as pepper seeds, herbs and cereals.
